Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Maine Coon cats and working with Mindful Maine Coons Cattery.

Pricing, Deposits & Reservations

How much do Maine Coon kittens cost?

Maine Coon kittens from a reputable, health-testing breeder with champion bloodlines are a significant investment. Our kittens start at $3,800, with pricing varying based on color, pattern, and gender. Contact us directly to reserve yours.

Why do champion bloodlines matter when buying a kitten?

Because the traits that make a Maine Coon look and feel like a Maine Coon — the size, the strong muzzle, the tall tufted ears, the heavy bone structure — are all genetic. Breeding from champion-titled cats means those qualities have been evaluated, confirmed, and passed down. You're not guessing what your kitten will look like at maturity — you're buying from proven lines.

Are all of your cats from champion bloodlines?

Yes. Every King and Queen in our program comes from champion lines with WCF-registered pedigrees. Some of our cats are conformation champions themselves, meaning they've personally earned titles at cat shows.

How do I reserve a Maine Coon kitten?

Contact us by phone, text, or email to discuss available and upcoming kittens. Once you've chosen your kitten (or joined our waitlist), a non-refundable deposit secures your reservation. We'll send regular updates and photos as your kitten grows.

How long has Mindful Maine Coons Cattery been breeding Maine Coons?

Since late 2025. We're a newer cattery, but every King and Queen in our program comes from WCF champion bloodlines, and we pursued TICA's Outstanding Cattery Certification from the beginning rather than treating it as something to work toward later.

Is Mindful Maine Coons Cattery TICA certified?

Yes. We're TICA registered, and we hold TICA's Outstanding Cattery Certificate, which requires an independent, veterinarian-conducted inspection and a signed Code of Ethics, renewed annually.

What does the TICA Outstanding Cattery Certificate actually verify?

It verifies that our facilities, health practices, recordkeeping, and breeding ethics meet TICA's standards across nine inspection categories, as confirmed by a licensed veterinarian rather than a self-reported checklist.

Can I visit before committing to a kitten?

Yes, and we encourage it. Families are always welcome to visit our Murrieta home by appointment, meet our Kings and Queens, and spend time with available kittens, from 9 weeks of age onward — by then the kittens have had their first shot. For sanitary and safety reasons, prior to 9 weeks we're happy to accommodate your viewings of your new kittens with video calls.

What happens after I bring my kitten home?

You get lifetime breeder support — for the life of your cat, not just the first few weeks. That includes questions about health, behavior, grooming, and general care whenever they come up.

Breed Information

How big do Maine Coons get?

Males typically land in the 18 to 22 pound range, with some exceptional cats pushing past 25. Females usually weigh 10 to 15 pounds. Overall length — nose to tail — can reach 40 inches, which is longer than a standard baseball bat. One thing that surprises new owners is how long the growing process takes. Maine Coons mature slowly over three to five years, so your kitten will keep getting bigger well after other breeds have stopped growing.

How long do Maine Coon cats live?

Most Maine Coons live 12 to 15 years, with well-cared-for indoor cats frequently reaching their late teens. Lifespan is heavily influenced by genetics, diet, and preventive veterinary care.

Are Maine Coons good with kids and other pets?

Maine Coons are known for a gentle, sociable temperament and often do well with respectful children. They also tend to coexist well with dogs and other cats, especially when introduced gradually. Children should always be taught to handle a cat gently — no cat should be expected to tolerate rough handling.

Are Maine Coons high maintenance?

Less than most people think. Their silky coat texture means they avoid the severe matting problems that plague breeds like Persians, so you won't need daily grooming sessions. Two to three brushing sessions per week, regular nail trims, and standard veterinary care are the main commitments. They are social cats who need companionship and playtime, but they're not overly demanding about it.

Can Maine Coons live in apartments?

Yes. Despite their size, Maine Coons care more about vertical space and mental engagement than square footage. A tall cat tree, a spot by a window, and an owner who plays with them daily will keep an apartment Maine Coon perfectly content.

Do Maine Coons need a companion cat?

They don't strictly need one, but they strongly prefer companionship. Maine Coons are social cats who bond closely with their people, and they can become lonely or anxious if left alone for long periods. If the house is empty during work hours, a second cat makes a significant difference in their happiness and behavior.

What is the difference between European and American Maine Coons?

Same breed, different look. European lines have been bred for a more wild, powerful appearance — bigger ears, stronger jaw, heavier build. American lines are softer and more classic in style. At Mindful Maine Coons Cattery, we focus on European bloodlines for their dramatic look and size.

Grooming, Allergies & Care

Are Maine Coons hypoallergenic?

No. No cat breed is truly hypoallergenic, and Maine Coons — with their thick, dense double coats — can be challenging for people with cat allergies. If allergies are a concern in your household, try visiting a breeder or spending time with a friend's Maine Coon before committing to see how you react.

Shipping & Pickup

Do you ship Maine Coon kittens?

Yes, across the United States and internationally. Shipping via Alaska Air Cargo starts around $1,000, which covers the kennel, airline-required documents, drop-off, and the flight. Airline ticket prices aren't something we control, so the final figure moves with the route and date. We can also arrange an air nanny for an additional cost. If you'd rather collect your kitten yourself, pickup at our Murrieta home is free.

Every kitten who flies travels with two bowls for food and water, a ziplock bag of their food, and a veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel. Kittens can fly at 11 weeks without a rabies vaccination; from 12 weeks of age, a rabies vaccination is required. If you'd like to look into the details yourself, Alaska publishes both its live animal rates (effective February 1, 2026) and its zone map (2025), which together determine the freight portion of the cost for your destination. Alaska's rates are subject to change without notice.

Where is Mindful Maine Coons Cattery located?

We're based in Murrieta, California, and every kitten is born and raised inside our home. We welcome visits, and we also ship to families nationwide and internationally.

Health Testing

What health testing do you do?

All breeding cats are health tested for SMA, PKD1, and HCM. Our breeding cats also receive regular echocardiograms to monitor heart health over time, as heart conditions can develop even in genetically clear cats. All cats are vaccinated against FVRCP and dewormed regularly.
